At the start of the night I called for the Europa League to raise its game. Things did not get off to a promising start in Russia, but four goals in Blegium and another four at White Hart Lane have done me nicely.

All three of our Premier League teams are handily placed in their groups and look well set for places in the final 32.

That's all from us tonight though, make sure you get yourselves back here on Saturday for all the latest football action. See you there.

  2. 2227

Here's some words from Spurs boss Andre Villas-Boas: "We were brilliant from the beginning - in possession, in attack, in the way we kept the ball, our mobility and desire to bounce back from 1-1.

"We controlled it from the beginning and it was really pleasing to see. When you play like this, you deserve good things and today it came to us.

"He [Defoe] makes the most of his opportunities, Gareth was amazing to make two goals with his link-up play. When you have so much quality in your link-up play it's possible to score.

"Defoe is a clinical striker and it's good for him to overtake Teddy Sheringham in the scoring charts, it means a lot to him.

"We're a team who still creates a lot of attack opportunites with one striker too. We've done well in the past with both [4-5-1 and 4-4-2]. We go four steps up in competition at the weekend, we're away, it's a different scenario and we have to focus on the game."

  3. 2226

Tottenham winger Gareth Bale on ITV4: "We're taking this competition seriously and hopefully we can win it. We needed to bounce back from the weekend's result (a 1-0 home defeat by Wigan) and we certainly have done that."

  4. 2222

Johnny, London, via text: "Tottenham fans are hilarious! One win at home against a team from Slovenia and all of a sudden they have forgotten about getting beat by Wigan on Saturday!"

  5. 2222

I've just seen Joey Barton's goal tonight - direct from a corner, whipped in under the crossbar. Question marks on the keeper.

  6. 2219

Fabrice Muamba on Twitter: (external) "Amazing day at WHL tonight. Thank you guys for everything. Spurs fans tonight were awesome. Thank you."

  7. 2218

Spurs boss Andre Villas-Boas has just said that his side face "not one step up - but four steps up in class against Manchester City on Sunday."

  8. 2214

Andrew Dias on Twitter: (external) "AVB will revert to 4-3-3 against City because they will attack us and pace on the break can win us that game."

  9. 2210

Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe on his hat-trick: "It feels amazing. As a forward you are judged on scoring goals. It's the best feeling in the world."

On moving above Teddy Sheringham in Tottenham's all-time goalscoring list: "For me that's special. He's a forward I used to watch as a kid. He was a fantastic player, a great goalscorer, for club and country. So I'm really pleased with that."

  10. 2210

Something to recap on is Newcastle's 2-2 draw with Club Bruges earlier on this evening. We haven't heard from boss Alan Pardew as yet - so here he is:

Pardew said: "We are going to have to kick ourselves if we don't beat Maritimo at home, with all due respect to them.

"We have got ourselves in a great position and are looking to just wrap the league up perhaps with that win there, which is our next game."

  11. 2206

So Lazio remain top of Tottenham's Group J following their comfortable 3-0 home win against Panathinaikos. Group I leaders Lyon's fourth straight win - a 3-2 victory at Academica - puts them into the knockout stages, while 2010 Champions League winners Inter Milan, Bayer Leverkusen, Hannover and Metalist Kharkiv join them after respective victories.

  12. 2205

That's the way of the footballing world isn't it? Score a hat-trick, and Jermain Defoe is brilliant, switch to 4-4-2 and Andre Villas-Boas is a hero. But the real test will come at the weekend you fancy.

Spurs travel to Manchester City on Sunday afternoon. A big, big game.

  13. 2203

Davey Jay on Twitter: (external) "Kudos to AVB for shifting the system slightly to what Spurs are more used to, and it worked. Are you watching, Brendan Rodgers?"

Another Character on Twitter: (external) "How long is AVB going to stay as a genius after tonight's tactics. His next loss, and he'll be branded as useless again."

  14. 2156

Job well done for Spurs in the end, and they now need four points from their two remaining Europa League games to secure qualification. Andre Villas-Boas may have said before the game that the team is not necessarily more attacking with two out-and-out strikers, but I disagree.

Jermain Defoe just looks a better player with someone alongside him.

  15. 2156
    FULL-TIME Tottenham 3-1 Maribor
  16. 2155

Steven, Cambridge, via text: "Am I the only one that has noticed when Defoe doesn't score he gets labelled as 'wasteful', but when he scores everyone turns around and loves him again?"

  17. 2153

Final change for Spurs as Iago Falque gets a few minutes under his belt, replacing Aaron Lennon.

  18. 2152

We are into four minutes of stoppage time.

  19. 2148

More good work from Thomas Carroll as he bursts into the final third and finds Clint Dempsey on his shoulder.

The American turns inside his man and gets a shot off but it is half blocked and Jasmin Handanovic is able to make the save. USA boss and Spurs legend Jurgen Klinsmann is in the stands to keep an eye on Dempsey, but I think he left to beat the traffic about 90 seconds after Clint got on.

  20. 2147

Bob, Oldham, via text: "Re Neil from Greenwich. Jose Baxter isn't clubless - he's tearing League One apart for Oldham!"

  21. 2147

Gareth Bale has just been too good for Maribor tonight. But he earns himself a bit of a rest, coming off for Ryan Mason as we tick over into the last five minutes.

  22. 2146

Daniel Collins on Twitter: (external) "You put Defoe in any top European team and he would score goals. The guy is top class."

Danny Gunn on Twitter: (external) "Two up front and Spurs look great up front. Pace and space on both wings for Lennon and Bale."

  23. 2145

Jermain Defoe has not netted five trebles for Tottenham. That's his first European one - he knows where the goal is alright.

  24. 2144

Ross, Catford, via text: "Get in! Great goal by Defoe, reminiscent of Lineker at his best."

Dan, Hornsea, via text: "To say Defoe has showed why he should be in the England squad would be an understatement. Clinical finisher!"

  25. 2143

Oh what a chance this is for 4-1. Aaron Lennon somehow evades two tackles on the edge of the box, it all opens up for him but he tries to pass it to Emmanuel Adebayor for some reason. Shoot man! Shoot.

  26. 2143

Job done for Jermain Defoe as he comes off with nine minutes left to be replaced by Clint Dempsey.

  27. 2141

Is that game over now? You would think so. Gareth Bale and Jermain Defoe have been excellent, but Spurs look a bit culpable at the back.

  28. 2140

Neil, Greenwich, via text: "The last thing we need is to hype young Tom Carroll. Jose Baxter was meant to be the new Rooney...he's currently clubless. But yes Carroll is very good."

  29. 2138
GOAL Tottenham 3-1 Maribor - Jermain Defoe (77 mins)

Textbook Gareth Bale. Textbook Jermain Defoe. Tom Huddlestone plays a brilliant ball over the top into the path of Bale, he rips past his defender and squares the perfect cross for Defoe to side-foot home from eight yards out and complete his hat-trick.

  30. 2135

Spurs go close to a third killer goal again. Kyle Walker runs at the Maribor defence and plays in Emmanuel Adebayor, he turns and drives in a low shot but Jasmin Handanovic is at the near post and keeps it out. That could be a key save as we enter the last 15 minutes.

  31. 2133

Gareth Bale is apparently complaining of a headache after that earlier whack to the jaw. He's certainly been quiter since he took the knock.

  32. 2132

Another half chance for Spurs as Emmanuel Adebayor turns away from his man and could shoot, but instead decides to try and find Aaron Lennon on the right and the move breaks down.

Tavares is then almost in for Maribor, he is onside, but Kyle Naughton this time defends really well to get back and make a challenge.

  33. 2131

Jack, Norwich, via text: "Oh dear, only a handful of games and Carroll is suddenly the 'new Modric'. Try him out against a world class side, then we'll see how good he is! Not saying he hasn't got the potential, but he's no way near Modric right now!"

  34. 2130

Change for Maribor, who should be out of this game but aren't. Goran Cvijanovic comes off to be replaced by Dejan Mezga. There are 20 minutes left.

  35. 2129

Lazio are firmly on course to top Tottenham's Group J tonight, as they add a third goal without reply against Greek visitors Panthinaikos.

From looking rather comfortable in Bilbao, Lyon are now winning 3-2 against Athletic - but only after surrendering their two-goal half-time lead within 10 minutes of the restart. However, a draw will still be enough for the French side to progress into the last-32 tonight.

Bayer Leverkusen are 3-0 ahead and cruising against Rapid Vienna, while Inter Milan, Hannover and Sporting Lisbon are the only other sides still winning.

  36. 2124

Now then! Jermain Defoe is played in on goal by another good pass from Thomas Carroll, he goes down as Arghus clatters into him but somehow referee Antti Munukka does not give the foul. If he had done, Arghus would have been off. Defoe was sniffing a hat-trick for sure.

  37. 2121

Gareth Bale in the thick of it again. He takes a whack on the chin from Aleksander Rajcevic and spits out some blood. Bale is not happy about the challenge but it looked clumsy rather than nasty to me. The game goes on.

  38. 2120

It is surprising that Jermain Defoe is not in the England squad. The only strikers in the squad to play Sweden are Wayne Rooney, Danny Welbeck and Daniel Sturridge. The emphasis is on youth though - it's only a friendly.

  39. 2120

Matt, Romford, via text: "Why exactly was Defoe dropped from the England squad? Surely the most in-form English striker at present."

Max, Surrey, via text: "I think by now Defoe has established himself as the best England No.9. He can create something from nothing, just what England need."

  40. 2120

This is brilliant from Gareth Bale. Emmanuel Adebayor plays the ball into Bale's feet 25 yards out, Bale waits a moment and then scoops it right over the top of the defence, Barcelona-style, for Adebayor to run on to. Adebayor has the whole goal to aim at really but puts his volley wide of the near post.

Terrible miss, but superb approach play.

  41. 2116

An uncomfortable moment for Spurs and their keeper Hugo Lloris. He is hesitant to come for a flat free-kick from the right, and goalscorer Robert Beric gets there ahead of him and heads over the top. Close.

  42. 2116

Les Pearson on Twitter: (external) "From a Gooner - total respect to the Spurs fans. Great reception for Fabrice Muamba - let's not forget, the big man was an Arsenal player."

Ryan Langdon on Twitter: (external) "Tom Carroll is the new Modric in waiting!!"

  43. 2115

Gareth Bale is in the book. He skins two men, wants a free-kick for being pulled down but the decision goes the other way. Bale boots the ball away in frustration and earns a booking.

  44. 2114

Jon, Spurs fan in Eastleigh, via text: "Re 2059. Having seen replays, I've had a bit of a 'mare there! Would still lay more blame at Naughton's door than Lloris though!"

  45. 2112

Forget that bright start for Maribor as Spurs look rampant now. Gareth Bale almost cuts through and wins a corner, before Michael Dawson forces a cracking save from Jasmin Handanovic with a low drive. He had handled the ball though so it would not have counted.

  46. 2110
GOAL Tottenham 2-1 Maribor - Jermain Defoe (49 mins)

Notch up another goal for Jermain Defoe. Young Tom Carroll picks him out with a perfectly-weighted through ball, Defoe lets the ball run across his body on to his left foot, and smashes it into the corner. Cracking finish.
