The moral of tonight's story is, if you're planning a big celebration, don't invite Zlatan.

Tonight was all about Steven Gerrard winning his 100th cap, but instead we all go to bed talking about Zlatan and his collection of wonder goals.

Thanks for your company tonight - make sure you join Chris Bevan and I on Saturday for more live text gold. Top of the bill is tasty north London derby.

    See you there...

You can't fault John O'Shea for optimism. Speaking after the Republic of Ireland's 1-0 defeat at home to Greece he said: "It's a step forward...We would have liked to pick up a win tonight to give everyone a bit of a boost but I think performance-wise it was much better than the Germany game."

Drew Crawford on Twitter: (external) "You have to feel for Joe Hart conceeding some of the best ever goals - Rooney, Crouch and now Zlatan."

Nurul Alum on Twitter: (external) "Last week Zlatan had 4 assists in the CL for PSG, tonight 4 goals for Sweden what will we get next week?"

    INTERNATIONAL ROUND-UP

France were the big winners in the clash of the European heavyweights tonight. Lyon striker Bafetimbi Gomis's second-half winner handed Les Bleus a 2-1 win against Italy in Parma. But nothing could separate bitter rivals Netherlands and Germany, who played out a goalless stalemate.

Goals from Barcelona pair Pedro and David Villa are helping Spain beat hosts Panama 2-0 in a later kick-off. Elsewhere, Liverpool striker Luis Suarez netted Uruguay's third as they won 3-1 in Poland, while Argentina drew 0-0 in Saudi Arabia and Portugal were held 2-2 by hosts Gabon.

    More from Steven Gerrard:

"I thought we did well considering the team we put out and the squad we brought here. Sometimes, you have to put your hands up to individual performances.

"I have been playing football a long time but Zlatan's fourth goal is probably the best goal I have seen live. I cannot pay a bigger tribute than that.

"I am looking forward to Brazil in February, taking every cap as it comes. I am not targeting any number of caps, I am targeting taking this country to the World Cup."

    FA CUP

In amongst the international action, two late goals helped Leyton Orient dump out non-league hosts Gloucester City and progress to round two of the FA Cup.

David Mooney headed the League One side's opener from Dean Cox's cross, before Cox secured victory less than 60 seconds later with a 20-yard drive. Orient will play Blue Square Premier side Alfreton in the next round.

England captain Steven Gerrard on BBC Radio 5 live: "It is mixed emotions for me, I am disappointed with the result, but there were a lot of positives in this game. We controlled it for 75 minutes but collapsed a bit at the end.

"A lot of young players were out there tonight, and I thought they were terrific.

"I thought Raheem Sterling did really well, he always looks dangerous. When I was 17, I was an apprentice at Liverpool cleaning boots, but look how far he has come.

"Leon Osman is a different age at 31 but he played well. They will never forget their first game."

  10. 2202 5-live
Northern Ireland 1-1 Azerbaijan BBC Radio 5 live

Former Northern Ireland manager Nigel Worthington on BBC Radio 5 live: "It was very frustrating and there were six chances they should have scored from. It has cost them very dearly.

"There were so many chances created. In the first half, Northern Ireland allowed Azerbaijan to dictate the game, but in the second half we got in their faces and disrupted them.

"It was always a big ask to get through, but now our chances are very, very slim, if not nothing at all."

  11. 2202

Sweden coach Erik Hamren has been on about his charge Zlatan's ridiculous goal tonight...

"Sometimes, when he's doing these things, in training or in matches, you don't think it's possible," he said.

"Sometimes, you think you're watching a video game. Because it's not possible to do that -- the fourth goal, for example."

  12. 2159 5-live
    BBC Radio 5 live

Here's more from England manager Roy Hodgson on BBC Radio 5 live: "The free-kick was from a very, very long way out, and was a free-kick that on many occasions Joe Hart would stop.

"I wasn't expecting Sweden to score at any minute. Their opportunities were, really, quite limited.

"I thought the debutants were good, all of them did fine and I am certainly a wiser man than before this game going into 2013.

"We were undone by some individual brilliance and maybe a bit of inexperience."

  13. 2158

"If you carry on the way you're going, by the time you're 17 you'll either be in prison or playing for England."

We all heard that message at school at one time or another, I'm sure - but that is what Raheem Sterling's teacher Chris Beschi told the youngster a few years ago.

He had a very promising debut tonight, did Raheem. Read the full interview with his former teacher here.

BBC Radio 5 live pundit Pat Nevin on Zlatan Ibrahimovic: "When he is on his form, and when he can be bothered, he is fantastic. His technique for that fourth goal was off the scale.

"The second goal was fantastic, and for the third goal, Joe Hart was at fault, but the power he got from 33/34 yards was spectacular. He is a hard, hard player to play against.

"In that form, it is hard to see anyone much better than him. His fourth goal was beyond perfection, it was magical."

  15. 2152

Former England captain Rio Ferdinand on Twitter: (external) "Zlatan just silenced any doubters he had... Ruthless tonight."

  16. 2149 5-live
Luxembourg 1-2 Scotland BBC Radio 5 live

Scotland's temporary manager Billy Stark on BBC Radio 5 live: "We have to accept we were not great in the second half. We dug in and saw the result out.

"They had some big boys and we had to defend some free-klicks we thought were a bit harsh. We had one or two nice exchanges of play, but we would want a lot more attempts on goal.

"I wasn't thinking about the permanent job. We could have done better, but taking the game in isolation, it was important to get a victory.

"It is difficult to win international games."

  17. 2147 5-live
    BBC Radio 5 live

England manager Roy Hodgson on BBC Radio 5 live: "I thought it was a good performance. Obviously, it was disappointing to concede three goals in the last 15 minutes when we were looking so good at 2-1. It was a good performance to get us into that position.

"I took the risk to give debutants a chance, obviously that will open things up, and I was hoping we'd hold out.

"Ibrahimovic scored a wonder goal to put the icing on cake, but for large periods of the game I can be more than satisfied. Many players who got a chance came out with great credit.

"For long periods we were quite dominant and in control. I thought our passing and movement was good and when we took the 2-1 lead it was a correct assessment of what we had seen on the field.

"Ibrahimovic being kept on cost us a result."

Jon in Manchester on text: "The Ibra lovers are pouring forward. Lovely goal, but I will only be convinced if he turns up consistently in the games that mean something. Let's see if he's knocking them in once we get into the quarters of the CL. I bet he won't".

Sam in Oxford on text: "We occasionally describe great moments in football as being like something out of a computer game. You couldn't even get close to what Zlatan did in any game."

Dan on text: "Unreal strike by Ibrahimovic... almost as good as the one Trevor Sinclair scored for QPR."

  19. 2145

England manager Roy Hodgson on ITV: "No doubt Ibrahimovic's fourth goal was extraordinary. That put the tin lid on the game. But it was the second and third goals which killed us.

"For 60/70 minutes we played very well and deserved to be leading. I was anxious to look at a few players and the changes probably disrupted us. But there are a lot of positives to take from the game."

  20. 2145
FULL-TIME Republic of Ireland 0-1 Greece

The Republic dominate possession for the last 20 minutes without creating a single clear-cut chance with the Greeks content to sit back and hold onto their lead.

After a promising start, it's turned into a disappointing night for the Republic and the result will lead to more pressure on manager Trapattoni.

  21. 2143 taylor
BBC Radio 5 live pundit and former England manager Graham Taylor at the Friends Arena:

"You cannot drop your concentration for a second when Zlatan is about. There were a lot of misunderstandings between Joe Hart and his centre-backs, and you cannot afford that in any game, never mind international games.

"Ibrahimovic scores exceptional goals. This last goal, his fourth goal, was an exceptionally gifted, talented goal.

"We need to see it again."

  22. 2143

Hats off to David Healy. To score 36 goals for Northern Ireland is frankly remarkable. It's still not a good result, but better than a defeat. Northern Ireland now nine points behind leaders Russia, who they play next.

  23. 2141 lineker
Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker on Twitter:

"Wouldn't overly worry about the England defeat. There's a semblance of a team developing. Young players who can beat people and keep possession."

GOAL Northern Ireland 1-1 Azerbaijan - David Healy (90 mins)

I spoke too soon! His place in Northern Irish folklore was already confirmed long ago but David Healy pulls off some more magic, firing in a low free-kick under the wall and in for his 36th national goal. He's very much the Zlatan of Belfast.

  26. 2138

It looks like a defeat for Northern Ireland then as we enter the sixth and final minute of added time.

  27. 2137
    YELLOW CARD

Zlatan Ibrahimovic was booked for taking his shirt off after that goal by the way. Just a crazy rule.

  28. 2136 phil_mcnulty_bw122x110
BBC Sport chief football writer Phil McNulty on Twitter:

"What better way for Zlatan to combat a terrible pitch by simply taking the ball acrobatically in mid-air & measuring the finish perfectly?"

  29. 2135

England captain Steven Gerrard, who won his 100th cap, on ITV: "Ibrahimovic's performance was certainly world-class. Credit to him, he scored one of the best goals I've ever seen live. It was his night.

"From our point of view, there were a lot of young lads making their debuts and they did well. We will take a lot from this game. We collapsed a little bit near the end, but there were plenty of positives."

  30. 2134

There are six minutes of added time in Belfast. Still a chance for Northern Ireland to nick a point.

  31. 2133

It's been all Northern Ireland in this last 10 minutes but they can't find a way through a well-drilled defence.

Mick in Cheltenham: "Joe Hart has to be one of the most overrated keepers around. Give Fraser Forster a game, far superior as demonstrated by his flawless performances against Barcelona. Hart's form has been suspect for some time now."
