  1. 1940

Well then, New Year's Day is done and dusted football wise.

All that is left to do now is follow Stephan Shemilt's live text commentary of the PDC World Darts final and get ready to go back to work.

Then come back and join us tomorrow night for more live footy - we've got Chelsea v QPR, Liverpool v Sunderland and Newcastle v Everton.

Enough there for you? I thought so. See you there...

  2. 1939

Tottenham winger Aaron Lennon after the victory against Stoke on Twitter: (external) "Great way to start the new year by the boys. Buzzing so much. Keep White Hart Lane rocking for us, it helps so much!!!"

  3. 1939
    Southampton 1-1 Arsenal

Southampton manager Nigel Adkins: "It was a good performance. Arsenal have been scoring a shed load of goals and we nullified that threat and carried plenty of threat ourselves.

"The own-goal was a spawny one that came off his toe but these things happen and we'll get rub of the green soon. They started brightly but we stuck out it, grew in confidence and played well.

On good reception for Walcott and Chamberlain: "We've got a fantastic academy - these players have come through our system and they deserve that reception. The supporters are fantastic here."

  4. 1934 pougs
BBC Radio 5 live presenter Mark Pougatch on Twitter:

"Southampton deserved that point for their huge endeavours. Again Arsenal play with a self entitlement not commensurate with their ability.

"Manchester United work so hard for the right to play. It's not rocket science. It's called life in whatever capacity you live it."

  5. 1933

Arsenal will have to play a lot, lot better than that to beat Swansea in the FA Cup next weekend. They then face Manchester City and Chelsea in their next two games - and don't forget that Bayern Munich are on the horizon in the Champions League...

  6. 1930 lineker
Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker on Twitter:

    "MOTD running order: Swa/AV, Wig/ManU, WBA/Ful, ManC/Sto, Tot/Rea, WHU/Nor, Sou/Ars. Average more than three goals a game."

Watch the highlights from the New Year's Day action at 2225 GMT on BBC One.

  8. 1929

That is how erratic Arsenal can be. They have only won nine of their opening 20 games this season.

Steven Marshall on Twitter: (external) "Seven goals at Newcastle, one shot on target at Southampton. Which Arsenal to turn up next week?"

Maxim on text via 81111: "Did Arsenal have a massive team NYE party last night or something? That was the worst performance I have seen from us in a long, long time."

  11. 1924

Arsenal are now five points shy of rivals Tottenham with a game in hand. That race for the Champions League spots is going to go to the wire isn't it? Everton and West Brom remain in the hunt.

Ruridh Allen on Twitter: (external) "Gervinho is awful for Arsenal. Like school custard I dread the one day a week when he might appear."

  13. 1921 mark_bright
Former Crystal Palace striker Mark Bright at St Mary's on BBC Radio 5 live:

"Four straight wins and I thought Arsenal would come here and win. The draw was a fair result, and if anything, Southampton probably deserved the three points.

"They have climbed out of the bottom three and the fans at St Mary's are absolutely delighted with that performance."

  14. 1920

That is enough for Southampton to clamber out of the bottom three. A decent point for them, but a very shoddy display from Arsenal.

    CLOSE!

Arsenal finally construct a move of note, with Mikel Arteta finding Kieran Gibbs screaming into the area. However, he tries to find Olivier Giroud in the middle instead of lacing a shot into the corner and Saints get it away.

Jonah Berman on Twitter: (external) "If Arsenal can't beat Southampton, how on earth are we going to have any chance against Bayern Munich in the Champions League?

  19. 1913
    GREAT SAVE!

What a chance for the Saints. Jason Puncheon is allowed to beat Kieran Gibbs far too easily in the right channel, he works the ball on to his right foot but shoots straight at Wojciech Szczesny in the Gunners net.

  20. 1911
    YELLOW CARD

Southampton substitute Steve De Ridder has only just come one but he earns a yellow card straight away for hauling down Bacary Sagna.

David Ljunggren on Twitter: (external) "Arsenal's passing has been appalling against Southampton. There is no other word to describe how bad it is."

    FINAL FIVE

Into the last few minutes now...

  23. 1910 mark_bright
Former Crystal Palace striker Mark Bright at St Mary's on BBC Radio 5 live:

"I have seen Arsenal a lot over the last few years and this is the worst I have seen them play. Their passing has terrible, they have been shambolic today on the ball.

"This is supposed to be a team that is competing to finish in the top four. I think Tottenham and Chelsea are stronger, Arsenal have left themselves too much to do.

"There is no shape to the team or cohesion. They are over-hitting passes, under-hitting passes... Southampton will never have a better chance to beat Arsenal, they are there for the taking."

You can listen to commentary of Southampton v Arsenal on BBC Radio 5 live now.

  24. 1909
    CLOSE!

Gervinho is a frustrating player. When he is on it, he is on it, but this is more like his usual fare. He backs up his defender with a strong run down the left but then cuts inside and shoots into the side-netting. He needed to hit the target there.

  25. 1907

We are into the last 10 minutes at St Mary's. Can either side find a breakthrough?
