  1. 2224
    England 1-1 Republic of Ireland

Judging by David's tweet below, England's only hope of beating Brazil on Sunday is to drag Rickie Lambert off the beach and put him on the plane to South America. I bet he'd swim there if he was given the call. I'll be back to steer you through that magical evening in the Maracana on Sunday. Until then, good night.

David Bates: (external) It's depressing the style of football England are playing under the current regime. We have very talented players who are wasted.

David Tyers: (external) Rickie Lambert to Brazil! As the top EPL English goalscorer he deserves it.

  3. 2220
    England 1-1 Republic of Ireland

Looking at the England bench, it's hard to see how Roy Hodgson can change things too much for the trip to South America. James Milner might offer more industry while Phil Jones looked a safer bet at right-back, but other than that I doubt he will change it too much.

  4. 2217
    England 1-1 Republic of Ireland

It appears Roy Hodgson was happy with that performance then. I wonder what type of result it would bring against Brazil in the Maracana? We'll find out on Sunday.

James Barry: (external) How can Roy Hodgson say that he was happy with that performance? Unbelievable.

William Taylor: (external) "Roy is a lot happier compared to the last performance. Explain, Roy, explain how we were better? We were the same, at best.

Will Horrax: (external) And it's performances like that which are making me fall out of love with the international side. So dull and plodding.

MANAGER REACTION England 1-1 Republic of Ireland

England manager Roy Hodgson on Daniel Sturridge's injury: "He's not going to Brazil, which is very sad for us. He had a good start and we were very sad to lose him. He hadn't played for a while and was carrying a slight injury. I fear it will keep him out for a few weeks but we don't think it's a fracture."

  7. 2211
MANAGER REACTION England 1-1 Republic of Ireland

England manager Roy Hodgson: "I was very pleased with the second half performance, we had sufficient dominance and goal chances to win the game but we must give credit to the Irish goalkeeper. I can't complain about anything we did today. They scored a good goal but it was the only time they looked like scoring.

"We were probing, trying all sorts of ways of getting around them. The important victories are the ones in qualifying and I certainly feel a lot better after this match than after our previous one."

    Roy Hodgson
  8. 2208
    England 1-1 Republic of Ireland

Roy Hodgson has confirmed that Daniel Sturridge will not travel to Brazil for Sunday's friendly because of the injury he sustained in the first half.

  9. 2205
    England 1-1 Republic of Ireland

What about Ireland? I'd say they are similar to England in that they have some talented players - Seamus Coleman and James McCarthy impressed tonight - but there wasn't a regular goalscoring threat. Who is the next cab off the rank now Robbie Keane's career is likely to come to an end in the next couple of years?

  10. 2202
    England 1-1 Republic of Ireland

It's hard to disagree with Ash (see tweet below). England lacked a real goalscoring threat tonight. Wayne Rooney dropped deep and tried to pull the strings from in the hole but, ultimately, he struggled to break down a pretty organised Irish defence.

Ash Burdett: (external) Not good enough from the forwards after Sturridge went off. We need someone who scores for fun to be able to really compete.

Doug Robinson: (external) What a dire, uninspired, atrocious performance. Worst I've seen England play in a while.

  12. 2157
PLAYER REACTION England 1-1 Republic of Ireland

England captain Ashley Cole: "I never expected to get 100 caps and have the reception I did. I'd like to thank the fans, I didn't expect that. It's something I'll never forget.

"I think we should have won. It was a great atmosphere. Their fans were very good. They were a tough side but I think we should have won. I had no problems with being captain. I don't always like talking to the press but I've lived a little boy's dream today."

    Roy Hodgson
  13. pleat
England 1-1 Republic of Ireland Former Tottenham manager David Pleat on BBC Radio 5 live at Wembley

"Jermain Defoe and Wayne Rooney were not really compatible. I don't think they've had a shot in the 90 minutes. Theo Walcott was the most dangerous player but his team-mates didn't feed him enough. Ireland were able to cope easily.

"It was a stiff performance. It wasn't as slow as a lot of friendlies are. Overall it wasn't not too bad. The media will have their say but the only thing that counts is what Roy Hodgson concludes from the game."

  14. 2153
    England 1-1 Republic of Ireland

Gary Lineker reckons England took a "step back to the dark ages of two lines of four". Was their set-up any different than when they last played Ireland in 1995? Or even that World Cup game of 1990?

  15. 2151
    England 1-1 Republic of Ireland

So what did we all make of that? Can we take any positives for either side? You know the drill by now - let me know on Twitter (#bbcfootball) or by texting us on 81111.

  16. lineker
    Gary Lineker - BBC Sport

"Even though results haven't been great, felt tactically England were maturing, but this is a step back to the dark ages of 2 lines of 4."

  17. 2148
FULL-TIME England 1-1 Republic of Ireland

That's it, all over at Wembley and we have our fourth 1-1 draw in a row in fixtures between these two sides. You were warned [1859].

Jay via text: "Where's Beckham when we need him. This lot are dire."

Mark via text: "Yawn, a typical waste of time and money for a friendly between a bunch of players who do not care against another bunch of players who are no good."

Neil Stephenson: (external) "I can't wait for the positives we're going to take from this performance."

Shaun Grey: (external) "England often huff and puff but they never seem to blow the house down."

  20. 2144
SUBSTITUTION England 1-1 Republic of Ireland

One last shuffle of the pack from Roy Hodgson, with James Milner on for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. Three minutes to go.

  21. 2143
GREAT SAVE! England 1-1 Republic of Ireland

David Forde is evoking memories of Irish goalkeeping great Pat Bonner now - making another superb save from Theo Walcott eight yards out to keep his side in the game.

  22. 2140
GREAT SAVE! England 1-1 Republic of Ireland

England almost snatch it when Wayne Rooney's clever pass from just outside the area is deflected into the path of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain but the onrushing David Forde manages to spread himself and save his side. Superb goalkeeping.

  23. 2138
SUBSTITUTION England 1-1 Republic of Ireland

Another change by Trap, with Conor Sammon replacing Jonathan Walters. Huge sighs of relief can be heard. I think they are from Ben Foster.

  24. dannymills
Danny Mills at Wembley - BBC Radio 5 live

"Ben Foster was very, very lucky there. England look like they're happy to play out the game. There's not an awful lot of movement."

  25. 2136
CLOSE! England 1-1 Republic of Ireland

Ben Foster's blushes are spared as a superb cross comes in from the right and the England keeper drops the ball under pressure from Jon Walters but the referee blows his whistle because Simon Cox is in an offside position. Post-retirement nerves?

  26. lineker
    Gary Lineker - BBC Sport

Don't like England playing this system. So easy to play against. Brazil will thrash us if we line up the same way. Predictable and dated.

  27. 2133
    Ecuador 2-4 Germany

Ecuador limit the damage against Germany, ending with a 4-2 scoreline. It looked like a heavy total was on the cards early on but the South Americans at least restored some pride in the second half. That was a second string German line-up, too.

  28. dannymills
Danny Mills at Wembley - BBC Radio 5 live

"I'm looking at the England substitutes bench and there's no one really they can bring on to create opportunities. James Milner is very industrial like and so too Jack Rodwell. But England need to create chances."

You can listen to commentary of this match on Radio 5 live.

  29. 2131
    England 1-1 Republic of Ireland

Ireland are growing in confidence here - perhaps sensing a famous victory. They are awarded a free-kick 25 yards out which James McClean curls wide of Ben Foster's goal.

  30. 2130
SUBSTITUTION England 1-1 Republic of Ireland

Jeff Hendrick is the latest man to come off the Irish bench, coming on for Stoke's Glenn Whelan.

  31. 2128
    England 1-1 Republic of Ireland

Good recovery from Phil Jones as he is robbed by James McClean but races back to pick the Irish winger's back pocket and make amends.

William Taylor: (external) "Is it just me or are these stale, rigid and uninspiring performances becoming a theme now under Roy? I hope it is just me."

Michael: (external) "People admonishing England need to remember this is a friendly yet Ireland's cup final."

Richard Powell: (external) "Love watching Seamus Coleman play. A real no-nonsense player at both ends of the pitch."

  33. 2126
    England 1-1 Republic of Ireland

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain's eyes light up as the Irish defence parts in front of him, but his low shot from 20 yards goes well wide of David Forde's far post. It was worth a pop though.

  34. 2124
SUBSTITUTION England 1-1 Republic of Ireland

Perhaps Ireland are looking for some fresh impetus on the flanks as James McClean is summoned for Aiden McGeady. The Sunderland man is given an almighty cheer by the travelling supporters. A popular man.

  35. 2122
SUBSTITUTION England 1-1 Republic of Ireland

Ireland make a change - dipping into their massive pool of substitutes to bring on Simon Cox for Robbie Keane.

  36. 2121
GREAT SAVE! England 1-1 Republic of Ireland

Excellent, incisive play from England on the counter as Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain picks up the ball in his own half, drives forward and takes out two Irish players with a clever pass to Jermain Defoe. The Spurs striker squares to Theo Walcott whose shot is tipped wide by David Forde at the near post.

  37. 2117
    England 1-1 Republic of Ireland

Ashley Cole's early bath means he misses out on a little bit of England history. He remains five minutes short of overhauling David Beckham in fifth place in the list of players who have spent the most time on the pitch for the Three Lions.

  38. lineker
England 1-1 Republic of Ireland Gary Lineker - BBC Sport

"The punters sitting in the Club Wembley seats should give their tickets to someone who'd like to watch the game, and stay in the bar."

  39. dannymills
Danny Mills at Wembley - BBC Radio 5 live

"What has helped the atmosphere inside Wembley is that the game has been quite entertaining. Yes, it's been scrappy in part and some of the quality you would expect has not been there. But there's been entertainment and that tends to focus the crowds attention."
